Tsurumi Tsubasa Bridge

Construction started in 1987

The Tsurumi Tsubasa Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with single plane cable stays stretching over the Tsurumi Channel between Daikoku Futo and Ogishima on the Bay Shore Route, with a total length of 1020m. As a key transportation center between port facilities in the Tokyo-Yokohama area, there are large hopes that it will further enhance the port capabilities of Yokohama Port.
Let's look back at the period from the start of foundation work in 1987 until the opening in 1994.

  • 1Erecting the steel caisson

    The large box made of steel (caisson), which is the foundation of the main tower, was created on-shore and towed to the pier erection site, and then installed.

    The caisson was filled with concrete to submerge and ground it. Then the ocean floor was drilled and the caisson was fixed to the ocean floor.

    The steel frame of the base of the main tower was created on-shore and erected in the caisson. Then the base was erected with reinforcing bars and filled with concrete. Then, the steel shell which joins the cross beams was embedded in the upper part, and the base of the main tower was complete.

    The steel main tower cross beam was created on-shore and erected and integrated with the base of the main tower using a large crane ship.

    The large block made on-shore was towed to the erection point using a barge, and erected using a large crane ship.
    *The girder between two main towers is called the center span girder, and the outside girder is called the side span girder.

    The blocks made on-shore were towed to the erection point, and erected using a large crane ship and a girder-based crane, thus building the main tower.

  • 7Suspending the cantilevers

    The blocks made on-shore were towed to the erection point using a barge, and erected using a girder-based suspension crane, thus erecting the center span girder. Cables connecting the girder and the main tower were connected at the same time.

    The last block was erected, the connecting work was completed, and the erection of the girder was complete.

    The construction was complete after the road accessories such as guardrail and lights were installed, and the roads were paved.

Opened on December 21, 1994

The form of the inverted Y-shaped main tower and the central part of the road connected by cable is reminiscent of a huge bird. Together with the Yokohama Bay Bridge, the Tsurumi Tsubasa Bridge is a landmark of the Yokohama Bay Area.

The name is chosen by the public!

The name of the Tsurumi Tsubasa Bridge was chosen by appilcations from the public. It took 8 rounds of selections to select a name.
Although names such as Aurora Bridge and Yokohama Marine Bridge were nominated, Tsurumi Tsubasa Bridge was judged to be the most appropriate. The word "Tsurumi" represented the region it was built in and the word "Tsubasa" gave an image and sense of wings which is suitable as the Haneda Airport is nearby, and it also denotes the prospect of soaring towards a new era. The name of a cherished bridge is infused with many feelings.
