University of Tokyo and the Metropolitan Expressway Collaborative Social Initiative on the Use of Local 5G in Road Infrastructure
The Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo (located in Bunkyo-Ku, Tokyo) and the Metropolitan Expressway Co., Ltd. (based in Chiyoda-Ku, Tokyo, with Toru Terayama as President and CEO) will launch a collaborative social initiative focused on the utilization of next-generation telecommunication infrastructure, local 5G (Note 1). This initiative aims to ensure stable infrastructure during disasters and facilitate smooth road traffic maintenance during normal circumstances. The Social Collaboration Initiative (Note 2) was established on June 1, 2024, marking the beginning of joint research.
Example of Local 5G Utilization
This initiative aims to conduct research on the sustainable deployment and operation of local 5G, as the next-generation telecommunication infrastructure for the Metropolitan Expressway. Additionally, it focuses on developing young researchers who will excel in the beyond 5G era. Ultimately, the goal is to educate future leaders in the academic domain of information and telecommunication, with an eye toward shaping the future society.
Furthermore, this initiative has provided an opportunity to expand the use cases of local 5G and promote the implementation of local 5G infrastructure on the Metropolitan Expressway. Considering the public nature of local 5G, both parties will cooperate to advance practical application beyond research.
